According to the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day usually occurs on the last weekend of September, which falls on September 29 this year.

In conjunction with this day, we would like to share a topic on oral health and your heart health.

Did you know that your oral condition can be an indicator of your heart condition?

Consider these facts:

  • People who have the highest amount of bacteria in their mouths were the most likely to have had heart attacks
  • Studies have shown that people with moderate or advanced gum (periodontal) disease are more likely to have heart disease than those with healthy gums

When there is an inflammation in the mouth, it may also cause inflammation in the blood vessels, which in turn  increases the risk for heart attacks. If the blood vessels become inflamed, it allows less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body, raising blood pressure.

Taking good care of your mouth and teeth might contribute to maintaining your overall health in the long run. Since everybody’s mouth and alignment of teeth is different, ask your dentist for tips on how you can brush better.  Regular visits to the dentist will also keep your body healthier – your dentist can detect early signs of other non-dental issues such as diabetes or heart problems before it gets worse or more complicated.

It is easy to maintain the right oral care habits to ensure healthier teeth and a confident smile: Just remember the three “Rules of 2’s”

  • Brush at least two times daily;
  • Brush at least two minutes each time;
  • Visit the dentist at least two times a year

At Specialist Dental Group, our dentists who have been trained in the specialty area of periodontology (gum treatment), have been interviewed widely on the connection of the gum disease with our overall health. They are your partners in maintaining healthy gums and teeth.
