The National Bureau of Research in the USA published a paper in 2008 about a study conducted by Sherry Glied and Matthew Neidell titled “The Economic Value of Teeth”. According to the report, women who grew up in areas where there was water fluoridation earned 4% more than those who did not live in such communities. This was particularly evident in families with a low socioeconomic status.

The premise of the research was the fact that people with bad teeth or missing teeth had more trouble finding jobs. The conclusion of the study was that employer and consumer discrimination were the likely factors where the women’s oral health affected their earnings.  This could possibly be due to less attractive physical appearance, especially for front-line positions, but also due to the perception that bad teeth equated to poor health or poor personal hygiene.

Small Steps, Big Change

There are certain professions where one’s appearance (and thus, one’s teeth) is placed at a premium e.g., models, television journalists, actors, and Singapore’s No. 1 Brand – the Singapore Girl.  A great smile is also helpful for other positions, whether they are customer service related or at the senior corporate level.

For those who have some major work to do on their teeth and gums, this may be due to accumulated years of neglect… or in some cases, due to genetics.  Don’t let obstacles such as anxiety or financial circumstances stand in your way.

There are methods to control dental anxiety, and if finances are an issue, speak with your dentist about whether there is a way to work out an instalment plan to get the needed dental work done. If the dental problem is not urgent, consider seeking treatment at a polyclinic or obtain a referral for specialist treatment at a government dental centre, where a waiting list may apply.

For those who are blessed with healthy teeth and gums, keep up the good work and make it a priority to maintain good oral hygiene. See your friendly dentist for twice yearly appointments. This is the best way to keep your pearly whites sparkling and flash that dazzling smile for the world to see.
