Before the 35th anniversary Gala Dinner Cum Celebration of the World's No.1 Dental Faculty, a whole-day Anniversary Symposium was held on 23 November 2017 at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital. In the first part of the symposium, six alumni and former staff shared their insights and rich experiences in various dental disciplines.
They were Dr Ansgar Cheng, Dr Franklin She, Dr Haston Liu, Dr Alex Chan, Dr Lily Tong and Prof Esmonde Corbet, who are specialists in Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Family Dentistry, Endodontics, Paediatric Dentistry and Periodontology respectively.
Their presentations covered not only developments, challenges, and opportunities in these disciplines, but also treatment considerations, legislative concerns, and voluntary dental service.
The highlight of the symposium was a Deans' Discussion Forum, in which invited former Deans of the Faculty - Prof Stephen Wei, Prof Frederick Smales, and Prof Laksgman Samaranayake - together with Prof Edward Lo, interim Dean in 2014, joined Prof Thomas Flemmig, current Dean, in a special on-stage panel. The stage panel shared their views on the topic of "35 years of excellence, what's next?". The symposium was attended by over 180 participants comprising alumni, academic staff, students, and local and overseas dental professionals including Prof Keiichi Sasaki, Dean of the Tohoku University Undergraduate and Graduate Schools of Dentistry, Tohoku University, Japan, and Prof Paul Coulthard, Dean of the School of Dentistry and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
