Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Clinics in Singapore
When should I go see a dental specialist or dentist?
Generally, you should visit the dental specialist or dentist at least once a year for a routine cleaning and check-up. There are, however, certain circumstances when you may need to see the dental specialist or dentist more frequently. For example, if you have periodontitis (severe gum disease), you may require regular periodontal (gum) treatment (likely 3 to 4 months interval). If you have a toothache, a chipped tooth, or a loose filling, schedule an appointment with your dental specialist or dentist as soon as possible. These problems can often be solved and fixed with a simple procedure, and it is best to address them before they become more serious. Regular dental visits may also be necessary for people with bridges or crowns, as these dental restorations must be monitored to ensure no infections.
Your general dentist may refer you to a specialist if you require a more complex dental procedure which involves certain dental expertise, coordination of different specialists or multiple visits. For more information, it is best to consult your dental specialist or dentist in Singapore.
What are the types of dental care?
Various types of dental care are available to people of all ages today. At Specialist Dental Group, we offer the full suite of dental services.
1. Prosthodontics (Teeth Replacement & Cosmetic Dentistry)
When your teeth are damaged or missing, prosthodontic treatments can help restore your mouth’s natural appearance and functionality via bridges, dental implants and dentures. Prosthodontists are also highly trained for cosmetic procedures like veneers and crowns.
2. Periodontics (Gum Treatment)
Preventive treatments, diagnosing and treating conditions and diseases that affect the supporting structures of our teeth and jaw bones, fall under this category. Some procedures include scaling and root planning, gum surgery and gum grafting.
3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Oral Surgery & Reconstructive Dentistry)
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are known for wisdom teeth extractions, corrective jaw surgery, dental implant surgeries, cyst removal and biopsy.
4. Orthodontics (Teeth & Bite Alignment)
Orthodontic treatment helps improve teeth and jaw alignment for better bite and oral health. Orthodontic appliances like braces and clear aligners can correct misaligned teeth, underbites, crossbites or overbites.
5. Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)
When a tooth becomes infected, damaged or diseased, an Endodontist determines if she can save the tooth via root canal treatment.
6. Children’s Dentistry (Paedodontics)
In children’s dentistry, a paedodontist caters to children’s oral health and emotional needs ranging from babies to age 18. Some examples include teeth cleaning, cavity fillings and monitoring the development of your child’s teeth.
7. General Dentistry
These dental treatments look after the overall health of your teeth and oral hygiene. They include filling of cavities, x-rays, scaling and polishing, fluoride treatments and simple tooth extractions.
What should I look for in a dental clinic?
Whether you’re looking for a new clinic or trying to find a better fit than your current one in Singapore, there are certain factors you’ll want to keep in mind. The first thing you’ll want to consider is the location and hours of the dental clinic. You’ll want to ensure it is conveniently located and that the hours work with your schedule. If you have children who are schooling, you may also prefer a clinic that opens on Saturdays.
Another thing to look for in a dental clinic is a wide range of services. After all, your dental needs may change over time. By choosing a clinic that offers various services, you can be sure that you’ll always be able to get the care you need.
Additionally, it is crucial to choose a clinic with experienced and skilled dental specialists in Singapore. Look for dentists who have been practising for several years and have experience with various dental procedures. Remember to check out any reviews online from past patients to get an idea of the overall experience.
Can I walk in for a dental appointment?
Yes, some dental clinics in Singapore may be able to accommodate walk-ins for routine cleanings. Specialist Dental Group has a team of dental specialists that can help. However, if you have any preferred dental specialists or require complex procedures, you will require an appointment. As such, it is always best to call ahead so that the dental clinic can promptly provide you with the care you need.
If you are in pain, do let us know so we can arrange an appointment for you to come in on the same working day. We aim to alleviate your pain as soon as possible so you can return to your daily activities quickly.
How much is an appointment with the dentist?
In Singapore, the fees for a dental appointment can vary based on the type of procedure and the experience of the dental specialist. When necessary, we take a full mouth x-ray (S$160) during your first visit for a thorough dental examination. An x-ray ensures any dental abnormalities present in the jaw bone and between the teeth are detected promptly.
For scaling and polishing, it is S$250 to S$300 for adults. You may refer to our website’s fee guides found under each dental service.
To offset the fees for specific procedures, you may use Medisave from the Central Provident Fund (CPF) or Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) subsidies. Consult your dental specialist to know the treatment fees involved.
Can Medisave be used to cover dental procedures?
If you are planning to use your Medisave, do note that it can be used only for surgical procedures. For example, if you require surgery to remove your wisdom teeth, you may use MediSave to pay for the procedure. Implant surgery, bone grafting, removal of cysts, and biopsies are some other examples of procedures that may be claimable under MediSave in Singapore.
For non-surgical dental treatments such as crowning and extractions, Medisave cannot be used.
Can the CHAS card be used for dental treatment?
Yes, the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) card can be used at participating dental clinics in Singapore. The subsidy amount will vary depending on the colour of your Health Assist card. All Pioneer and Merdeka Generation card holders will also receive subsidies. As Specialist Dental Group® is a participating clinic, simply present your NRIC during your appointment to enjoy CHAS subsidies for your dental treatment.
