“I pray thee peace, I will be flesh and blood;
For there was never yet philosopher
That could endure the toothache patiently,
However they have writ the style of gods,
And made a push at chance and sufferance.”
– William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing
Even Shakespeare wrote about it. A toothache signals something that you should not ignore, even if the pain goes away on its own after a while. One can experience toothache from eating or drinking something too hot or cold; the pain could also be due to teeth grinding or a problem with your jaw joint (temporomandibular). Other common reasons include dental cavities, loose fillings, chipped or cracked teeth, or inflamed nerves. Additional symptoms may include headaches, earaches, fever, bad taste or odor in the mouth, or swelling near the tooth. An impacted wisdom tooth can also cause significant pain. If untreated, damage commonly extends to the adjacent healthy teeth and the surrounding jawbones. Impacted teeth also develop into cysts, abscess, and tumors that may destroy a great area of one’s jawbones.
