A gap between your teeth can be charming or a pain. Madonna, Chris Martin (lead vocalist of Coldplay), Condoleezza Rice (the 66th United States Secretary of State) are some famous people with a space between their two upper front teeth (called a midline diastema).
Diastemas are common, especially among children. A diastema is a natural part of a child’s development and most commonly occurs during the “ugly duckling” stage of dental development. It may correct on its own as the permanent teeth continue to erupt. If a diastema persists after the eruption of adult teeth, it will become permanent and depending on how large the gap, your teeth may become poorly aligned. This may cause aesthetic concerns. Other causes of diastema include habits like thumb sucking, a thick band of gum tissue between the teeth, an incorrect swallowing reflex, and more serious ones like periodontal (gum) disease. If untreated, periodontal disease will lead to further loss of bony around the affected tooth/teeth, and eventual loss of teeth may occur.
