Invisalign

What is Invisalign?
Invisalign™ uses 3-D computer imaging technology to plan and map the complete treatment. It is a series of clear, virtually invisible custom-molded aligners. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks and gradually moves your teeth, before being replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.
How long does it take?
It varies from case to case, depending on the complexity and severity. It can range from 1 to 3 years. And it may take between 10 to 50 pairs of aligners on the average to straighten teeth for a patient.
Expand All | Collapse AllAm I suitable for Invisalign?
Please consult an Invisalign-certified Orthodontist for a proper assessment.
Invisalign may be suitable in the following situations: Teeth with spaces between them, or teeth that are mild to moderately crowded, as well as for teeth relapsed from previous orthodontic treatment. Sometimes, it is possible to treat one jaw with Invisalign and conventional braces in the other jaw in order to improve the outcome.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
- Invisalign braces are not as noticeable as conventional braces
- They are also easy to insert and remove, making cleaning the aligners easier
- Oral hygiene for the patient is much easier as they can remove the aligners when brushing their teeth
How will the appointments be like?
- First visit - collection of pre-treatment records- study models, radiographs and photographs. These will be sent to the Invisalign Headquarters. A high quality impression of your teeth using a special impression material is crucial in order to fabricate well fitted aligners to move teeth. Your orthodontist will also submit information on your case online, filling up a comprehensive treatment planning form.
- Second visit (2 weeks later) - the Invisalign Headquarters will post the proposed treatment plan online. This information can only be accessed by your orthodontist. Together with your orthodontist, you will be able to visualize your tooth movements and treatment outcomes in 3-D, using a programme called Clincheck. Changes can be made to the treatment plan at this point. Once the proposed plan is confirmed, the Invisalign Headquarters will go ahead to fabricate your aligners.
- Third visit (4-6 weeks later) - the full set of aligners is delivered to your orthodontist. A patient start-up and care kit for you accompanies this. Your orthodontist will prescribe your aligners based on your treatment progress subsequently.
- First review visit – (2-3 weeks after you have started wearing the aligners) – your orthodontist will check your aligners for fit and comfort.
- >Subsequent visits - you will be given 2-3 sets of aligners to wear till the next review about 6 weeks later. You will sequentially move up each pair of aligners till the next review with your orthodontist. Each pair of aligners is worn for about 2-3 weeks before progressing to the next pair. You will be reviewed regularly every 6-8 weeks.
Sometimes, your tooth may need to be filed down a little to obtain space to align the teeth. Tooth coloured composite ‘attachments’ are also sometimes bonded to your teeth to obtain more control in certain tooth movements.
At the end of treatment, you will require retainers. They maintain your teeth in the corrected positions.
What can I expect after insertion of my Invisalign appliance?
You should be able to resume your normal daily activities right after! For some patients, they may take a day or two to get used to the appliance in the mouth.
- The appliance is generally more comfortable than conventional braces. There may a general feeling of tightness as teeth are being shifted.
- The edges of the aligner should not cut you. If they do, please inform your orthodontist.
- Speech may be affected for the first couple of days. Do not worry as you will speak normally again with continuous wear.
How do I care for my aligners?
- Wear your aligners at least 20 hours daily. They should only be removed for eating and brushing.
- Keeping your aligners clean is hygienic for you. Toothbrushing with toothpaste and toothbrush is sufficient, followed by rinsing with cool water. There is no need to soak in special solutions and do not use hot water as it will cause the plastic to distort.
- Remove them when eating and drinking unless otherwise specified by your orthodontist. Hot foods and liquids may distort the aligner.
- Always carry the containers with you. Keep them in their containers when not in use to prevent losing them, breaking them and from distortion.
